AN ELDERLY man who groped a 75-year-old woman in a nursing home faces sentencing next month.

William Cartwright, 72, of Colyer Close, Eltham, fondled the breasts of a resident suffering from Alzheimer's Disease at a Chislehurst nursing home, a jury was told at Croydon Crown Court.

Care assistants spotted what was going on in the incident on June 24 in the grounds of the home and alerted police.

Prosecuting, Jennifer Knight said he had sat on a bench with the woman and was seen putting his left hand under the woman's top.

Miss Knight added: "The woman was obviously unfit to stop him and he quite clearly knew she was unable to refuse."

Unthika Coate, a former employee at the home, recalled that he put his arm around the woman's waist and touched her breasts under her jumper.

Miss Coate said: "I was about 15 metres away and could see what was happening. I watched for two or three minutes."

Cartwright denied a charge of sexually touching a person with a mental disorder claiming he had merely had his arm around her waist and had given her a light peck on the cheek. But he was found guilty last Thursday and will be sentenced on March 20. Remanding him on bail, Judge Simon Pratt said that he had found the trial "profoundly depressing".
