Eltham College student Matthew Burgess, 15, played the bassoon at the Proms last Saturday with the National Youth Orchestra.

They performed Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No 1, Lutoslawski's Concerto for Orchestra and Respighi's Roman Festivals, conducted by Vasily Petrenko, which was broadcast live on BBC2 and BBC Radio 3.

Headmaster of Eltham College, Paul Henderson said: "We are very proud of Matthew's achievements. He is extremely talented on an instrument that is not an immediate choice for most young people.

"Many of our pupils now aspire to perform like Matthew, and the Eltham College Community Orchestra Project gives boys in our Junior School free tuition and instrument hire on instruments like the bassoon to help get them started.
