Blockbuster is the latest high street firm to head into administration as financial problems continue to afflict the retail sector.

It was announced today the DVD rental business had been taken over by consultancy firm Deloitte to sort out the finances.

It has taken over the day-to-day running of the firm.

The company has four stores in Bexley borough - in Bexleyheath, Erith, Sidcup and Welling.

It has 4,190 staff spread throughout 528 stores across the country.

It is the third national company to go into administration in the space of a week following camera firm Jessops and entertainment business HMV.

Deloitte has reportedly said gift cards will be honoured, in contrast to the controversy caused by HMV.

Lee Manning, of Deloitte, said: “We are working closely with suppliers and employees to ensure the business has the best possible platform to secure a sale, preserve jobs and generate as much value as possible for all creditors.”
