More than 1,000 Bexley smokers stubbed out their cigarettes and kicked the habit for Stoptober.

The Bexley Stop Smoking service has the highest success rate in south east London, beating the national and London averages.

In Bexley 56 per cent of those who set quit dates went on to achieve their aim.

Backed by a huge number of supporters, including celebrities, charities and sports clubs, the Stoptober campaign has helped thousands of people stay smoke-free.

One couple from Slade Green have smoked for the last 50 years, but Tony and Pam Fenley were among those who successfully completed the 28 day challenge.

Tony said: “Neither of us has had a single puff since we set our Quit Date.”

They have saved £330 in one month so far and plan to spend the money on a holiday next year.

Research shows that those who stop smoking for four weeks are five times more likely to quit permanently.
