MORE than 100 MPs have signed a parliamentary motion calling on the government to back the development of solar power in deserts including the Sahara.

MORE than 100 MPs have signed a parliamentary motion calling on the government to back the development of solar power in deserts including the Sahara.

Tabled by Dartford MP Dr Howard Stoate, the proposals ask the government to support 'concentrating solar power' (CSP) in deserts in Europe and Africa.

Speaking last Monday, the Labour MP called for a 'super-grid' of low-loss transmission lines spanning the whole region.

He said: "In the light of increasingly urgent warnings from climate scientists about the need for action to cut worldwide emissions of CO2, we cannot ignore what is probably the single most effective means of cutting those emissions.

"Concentrated solar power is a concept of literally dazzling simplicity.

"It is an idea so simple, and with such extraordinary promise as a means of power generation, that it seems astonishing that in Europe we are only just waking up to its potential, more than 20 years after its first use in California."

The motion has 106 signatures at present.
