A SPORTS and community centre has been praised for being "a magnet for young people".

Olympics Minister Tessa Jowell visited the Eltham Centre in Archery Road last Thursday after the facility attracted 5,000 members in its first quarter.

Taking a guided tour around the community centre's leisure facilities Ms Jowell said other councils should follow the borough's lead in building high standard centres.

The Minister said: "Facilities like this are like a magnet for young people. People should be arguing for them across London.

"I am quite sure that if you are 15, 16, 17, this is a cool place to come. They want to come here, and that is the secret.
