A PUBLIC exhibition of plans to build a supermarket is due to open today.

A PUBLIC exhibition of plans to build a supermarket is due to open today.

Tesco is to show its second set of plans for the former Woolwich headquarters, in Watling Street, Bexleyheath, at the site until Saturday.

The chain has already submitted one planning application for an Extra store including 277 residential units. The new application is expected to be a third smaller.

A Tesco spokesman said: "With the provision of a first class Tesco store, we are offering a large amount of investment and providing 500 jobs on this underused site."

Residents opposed to the construction have formed a group called Tescono, and have vowed to demonstrate outside the exhibition with placards at 11am on Saturday.

Tescono leader Joe Keerthiratna, 44, said: "We knew they wouldn't give in and would try every trick available to them to wear residents and objectors down over time."

The exhibition will be open from 11am to 8pm on Thursday, 10am to 5pm on Friday, and 10am to 5pm on Saturday.
