MP for Old Bexley and Sidcup, James Brokenshire, has resigned from government as Secretary of State for Northern Ireland.

Mr Brokenshire, who replaced Theresa Villiers in July 2016, lives in Bexley with his wife and their three children, and served as security minister for the Home Office from 2011 to 2015.

It is understood that he has resigned due to a health condition.

Mr Brokenshire was first elected as the Conservative MP for Old Bexley and Sidcup in May 2010, and was re-elected in 2015 and 2017, with more than 60% of the vote.
