AN ANIMAL charity launched a river rescue to save eight orphaned ducklings.

The RSPCA launched its boat to collect the ducklings who were left in a box in the choppy River Thames near the steps at the Cutty Sark, Greenwich on August 18.

They were alerted by animal officer Zenon Brown, who reported the stranded creatures but was unable to reach them with his net.

He said: "It was initially thought that one duckling had got away, but when they got to the RSPCA branch clinic they discovered all eight ducklings were in the box"

They are now being cared for by the Medway West Branch of the animal charity.
