Pensioner rescued from flat inferno

A PENSIONER had to be rescued from his burning flat after he became trapped by the flames.

A PENSIONER had to be rescued from his burning flat after he became trapped by the flames.

Crews from Plumstead, Woolwich and East Greenwich were called to the ground floor of the two-storey property in Burrage Road, Plumstead at 6.50pm last Saturday.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus from Plumstead's Blue Watch used thermal imaging cameras to help locate the stricken 89-year-old who was carried to safety.

He was taken by London Ambulance Service to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich, suffering from serious burns and smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
