Shoppers are being urged to sigh a petition to persuade grocers Waitrose to open a shop in Sidcup town centre.
Politicians are stepping up their “We want Waitrose” campaign after the company decided it would not open a shop as part of the Travelodge development on the site of the Black Horse on Sidcup High Street.
So far 3,000 people have signed the petition for the store to set up shop in the town amid hopes it would attract shoppers from outside the borough and create jobs as Sidcup plans to use £1.8 million investment from the Mayor of London’s Outer London Fund.
Linda Bailey, the councillor responsible for economic development and regeneration said: “We are really grateful for the support of the nearly 3,000 people who have backed the petition so far and we hope to reach 5,000 signatures before we present the petition to the Waitrose board next month,.”
“The more signatures we collect, the clearer it will be how let down people feel and how much support there is for a Waitrose in the town.”
She added:“We have been working hard to improve the town centre and a brand like Waitrose that offers something different from other retailers currently in the town is just what we need,” said Cllr Bailey. “We believe it would attract people from the surrounding area to the High Street - and the support for the campaign suggests that it would also be a success for the company.”
Council leader Teresa O’ Neill said the support of companies like Waitrose was crucial to help revive the high street.
She said: “The unit in the Travelodge development has been built to Waitrose’s requirements. Although other companies are likely to be interested, the Council believes that Waitrose would offer something different from other traders in the south of the borough.”
People will be urged to sign the ‘We want Waitrose’ petition at Bexley council’s Talk Cafe at the Danson Festival over the weekend of July 6 and 7.
The petition is available to sign online at www.ipetitions.com/petition/we-want-waitrose, at town centre shops and at Sidcup Library in Hadlow Road, just off the High Street.
