Police warn owners of banned dogs: Obey the law

More than half London’s owners of banned dogs have not insured their pets

Police in London are warning pitbull owners that they need to insure their dogs - or lose them.

Owners of banned dogs are sometimes allowed to keep their animals if they are not considered a danger, but they must fulfil certain conditions - including insuring their pets and muzzling them at all times in public.

However, 580 of the 1,144 registered owners of banned dogs in London have allowed their insurance to lapse.

Officers have now written to all of them, warning them that they have seven days to get the insurance - or the dogs will be seized and they will face prosecution.
