Welling United’s four game unbeaten run in the Conference Premier came to an end at the hands of Macclesfield on Saturday.

After a goalless opening 45 minutes the Silkmen broke the deadlock after 64 minutes through Connor Jennings.

The midfielder beat Lee Butcher in the Welling goal following good work from Chris Holroyd.

The visitors had been the better side in the first-half, but Kurtis Guthrie headed a presentable opportunity wide and Loui Fazakerley hit the post from long-range.

But after Macclesfield took the lead, they quickly made it two as Holroyd headed in unmarked from Danny Rowe’s delightful cross.

The Wings gave themselves hope when top scorer Ross Lafayette slotted home his sixth goal of the season from close range with seven minutes remaining.

The defeat sees Welling drop six places to 13th, and they welcome Barnet to Park View Road on Saturday.
