AN 18-YEAR-OLD is setting up a help group for fellow diabetes sufferers in response to an alarming growth in the condition.

Gavin Griffiths, of Luddesdon Road, Erith, is launching Bexley Young Diabetics next month to provide support and advice.

Aimed mainly at those aged 14 to 40, it will offer a chance to share experiences and tips on how to cope with a condition that is rising at a terrific rate due to an increase in obesity levels.

Mr Griffiths, a student at North West Kent College in Dartford, developed type-1 diabetes (the most serious) at the age of eight after a severe bout of flu but has managed to control it with injections and monitoring of blood sugar levels.

He said: "There are quite a lot of people being diagnosed with diabetes, but there aren't many groups to get advice on it, so I thought I would set one up.

"I've managed to control the condition and I want others to benefit from what I've learned over the years."

A public event is planned for March 30 at the Holiday Inn, Old Bexley, from 7pm to launch the grouup.

Last year, Mr Griffiths raised more than £3,000 for Diabetes UK by running over 60 miles around the Isle of Wight. He aims to do it again in August. He is inviting people to join him on a bike ride around the island before his epic run to raise more money.
