A man who kidnapped a woman at a Thamesmead bus stop and raped her has been found guilty by a court.

David Witham, 52, waited for his victim, whom he knew, in his car in the early hours of January 5. As she walked towards the bus stop in Bentham Road at about 5.15am, he got out of his car, grabbed her and forced her into the vehicle.

He had raped her before she managed to escape from the car and get help. Witham, of no fixed abode, was arrested in Kent later that day.

He was found guilty of kidnap, rape and actual bodily harm at Inner London Crown Court on Friday and will be sentenced on July 31.

DC Alexandra Johnson said: “The victim has shown great courage in reporting this matter to police and attending court to give evidence.”
