Report says Bexley restaurants need a clean-up

PUBLISHED: 12:58 31 August 2012

A food hygiene report says restaurants and food businesses in Bexley borough have the highest failure rates for any local authority in the country.

Businesses are graded on a ratings system from zero to five.

The study by the Food Standards Agency scores found Bexley has the highest number of places failing (ratings of two and under) and the highest proportion of businesses with a zero rating at 8.46 per cent or 57 from a total of 673 businesses inspected.

A spokesman for Bexley council said: ““Our inspections are targeted towards more higher risk premises so our figures may appear disproportionate when compared nationally.

“If you see a food business not displaying their rating, ask them why not. Our message is if in doubt, walk out.”

The report found kebab shops and takeaways to be the worst offenders.
