The Duchess of Cambridge has now been in labour for more than ten hours and is approaching the “most active stage of the delivery”.

Trish Lyall, a senior midwife at the South London Healthcare Trust, said that a lot of women find the next stage of delivery the easiest.

She added: “This part is just about pushing and delivering the baby.

“A lot of women think this is the easiest part of the labour because in the first stage they are not doing a lot, but now they are working physically.”

Kate was admitted to St Mary’s Hospital in London in the early stages of labour just before 6am today (Monday).
