Scuba diving fact box

There are more than 20 different types of diving activity, including for sport or leisure, photography or fishing.

The word scuba is an acronym – it stands for Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus.

Divers are limited by physical laws to a certain amount of time underwater and a maximum depth. The recreational diving limit is 130ft (40m).

Equipment costs upwards of £1,000 in total, including flippers, wetsuit, goggles and gas cylinders.

To dive beyond that you will need to have technical dive training and equipment.

The British Sub Aqua Club BSAC, of which the Bexley club is affiliated, is the largest and oldest club in the world, being founded in 1953.
