Sidcup college eyes expansion

Dance and performance centre Bird College has announced it is holding a competition to design a new site for the institution.

The plans have been backed by Bexley Council, which has given its agreement in principal to move from five locations spread across Sidcup to Alma Road, which is currently home to Bexley’s Adult Education College and a new foundations day nursery.

The principal Shirley Coen said: “I’m absolutely delighted. This is a great opportunity for the college.”

The council is exploring a range of options for relocating the adult education college elsewhere in the borough, including the Resources Plus training centre in Erith and an expansion of the college’s centre in Brampton Road, Bexleyheath.

Bexley council leader Teresa O’Neill said: “It is a fantastic institution with an international reputation and we are keen to help it find a more suitable home in the borough.

“By helping the college move to a single site we believe we can help them build on their success.”

A statement making a further announcement on the progress of proposals will be made in the new year.
