A Sidcup mum-of-two is training her way towards competing in the squash European Championships after winning the British Open.

Keeley Johnson, 41, played squash in her youth, but only returned to the sport’s competitions after her marriage fell apart.

In February she won the British Closed over 40s Squash Championship in Manchester, beating the number one, and number two in the competition. She had been ranked as number three/four, but after winning, went on to secure her place in the Home Internationals, as number one - she went on to win on June 9.

She said: “It’s brilliant, I’m really chuffed, being ranked number one was lots of pressure and I was nervous, but winning has confirmed my ranking. I am number one for my age in Britain, but loads of nationalities take part in the British Open, so I actually don’t know what I’m ranked in the world now.”

Ms Johnson will compete in the European Championships in August.
