A VAN smashed through railings and was left hanging precariously over a major A-road on Tuesday.

Three fire crews, ambulances and police raced to the scene at 3.50pm in the Woodside Lane slip road which leads on to the busy A2 dual carriageway near the Danson Interchange.

Specialist winch equipment was used to stabilise the brown box van, owned by courier company UPS, to stop it falling on to the road below.

Fire officer, Terry Taylor, said: "We were called to an incident where a van had crashed through some railings and was in a precarious position. Nobody was injured and the driver did not have to be cut out. It's not clear at this stage what caused the crash."

The road was closed for around two hours while the van was recovered.
