A sending off midway through the second-half was the turning point as Welling United thrashed promotion hopefuls Forest Green Rovers 5-2 at Park View Road last night.

After squandering a two-goal lead, captain Lee Clarke was fouled by his Rovers counterpart Dale Bennett, who was giving his marching orders.

Ross Lafayette scored the resulting penalty and the Wings went on to win comfortably for their first victory in five league games.

The home side raced into a 2-0 lead with first-half strikes from Doug Bergqvist and Loick Pires.

Forest Green pulled one back on the stroke of half-time when Anthony Barry’s shot beat goalkeeper Lee Butcher.

The equaliser came after 62 minutes as Jack Obersteller handled a cross into the penalty area with Yan Klukawski tucking away the spot-kick.

But three minutes later Lafayette scored a penalty of his own and further goals from Clarke and Alex Dyer added gloss to the scoreline.

The win leaves Welling in 13th place in the Conference Premier ahead of a trip north to Hyde on Saturday.
