Welling United manager Jamie Day insists he has "no problem" with Loick Pires after re-signing the striker from Woking.

The Portuguese player left the Wings for an undisclosed fee last summer but returns having failed to shine at the Surrey club.

Day said: “I had no problem with Loick leaving when he did because he was trying to progress.

“On his day, Loick is a match-winner. He scored one goal in every three games when he was here before and I felt he got better as time went on.

“He is a player I enjoyed working with and for whatever reason it didn’t work out for him last season.

“If I can get him to the levels I believe he is capable of, then he can score goals and change games for us.”

The former Leyton Orient and Stoke trainee scored 21 goals in 63 games in a two-year spell at Park View Road.

But he scored just two goals in the Conference Premier for Woking before joining Boreham Wood on loan towards the end of last season, where he played twice against the Wings.

Striker Kurtis Guthrie and midfielder Jake Gallacher have signed new contracts for next season, but defender Ben Martin and midfielder Scott Kinch have left the club.

Day also revealed that he is in talks with around 10 players, including many of last season’s title-winning squad.
