Summer is here! At last we can put away our winter layers for a while, and look forward to some sunny days and light evenings.
If you are single the summer can seem like a great time for finding love again, whether by going out and about or searching online. So one of our Relate Counsellors has come up with some tips for successful dating:
n Be positive: Make sure you’re in a good place before you try and start a new relationship. Relying on someone new to make you happy doesn’t work.
n Don’t forget your friends: They care about you. They are your advisers, your supporters and your safety net.
n Be Yourself: Be honest about who you are and what you think. Don’t say things just to make the other person like you
n Take your time: Listen to your head as well as your heart! Really get to know the person before rushing into anything.
n Make a list of “No-Nos”: Think about what you absolutely can’t put up with in a relationship and stick to it.
nListen and make eye contact: Ask your date questions and listen to the answers as much as you talk about yourself. And make eye contact as you chat.
n Be safe: Let someone know where you’re going and who you’re going with. Text them later to let them know you’re OK.
n Find support: If you’ve had bad experiences in the past you might find it useful to talk things through with a Relate Medway North Kent counsellor either before or during your dating process. They can help you to better understand the choices and patterns you’ve previously made.
n Keep an open mind: If a date doesn’t work out, move on. Don’t take it personally and dwell on what you might have said or done differently. Don’t lose heart. And don’t give up on your search. It will all be worth it in the end.
