A department store which brought more than 100 jobs to Bexleyheath officially opened its doors today (Thursday).
More than 1,000 shoppers poured through the doors of Morleys department store in the Broadway Shopping Centre, after the mayor of Bexley Eileen Pallen declared it open for business this morning.
The store comes following a lengthy search to replace the original occupants, BHS, which closed down last year.
Former manager at the store Sophie Cassat, has been given back her old role at the new store.
Following work from the council, and shopping centre owner’s NewRiver, £3million renovation works got underway to prepare the two-floor shop.
“The store promises to bring something really special to the Broadway for residents and visitors alike,” said leader of the council Teresa O’Neill.
“The added bonus is the number of new jobs that the store has been able to offer local people.
“I am proud that we have been able to play a part in making the new store possible. This is a really good news story for our borough and I wish Morley’s and its staff every success.”
Ahead of the opening of Morleys’ ninth department store, a giant maze was opened to shoppers and will remain until Saturday, April 15.
Peter Sedge, General Manager at Broadway Shopping Centre, said: “This shop is a vote of confidence in Bexleyheath, and testament to the hard work put in both by NewRiver and Bexley council to secure such a quality tenant.
“We’ve had a great response from the public so far. Morleys is a great fit for Broadway Shopping Centre and we are looking forward to a busy year ahead.”
