PUPILS and teachers at a school are reeling from the death of one of its students who died crossing a road after colliding with a car.

Eltham Green School pupil, Gabriel Oluwole Rotimi, 14, from Thamesmead, was crossing Westhorne Avenue near the A20 at 5pm on Friday, November 27. He was taken to hospital suffering from serious injuries and later died.

Head teacher Joan Pickering posted a message to parents and children on the school's website that said: "It is with deep regret that I inform you of the tragic death of one of our students, Gabriel Oluwole Rotimi. Gabriel, a Year 10 student was knocked down on Friday evening.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very sad time.

"We would wish to assure all parents and carers that we will do all that we can to support our students particularly those in Year 10 during this very difficult time."

The incident happened near the Yorkshire Grey roundabout on the westbound carriageway towards the A20, opposite McDonald's fast food restaurant. The vehicle involved was a black Nissan Crewcab Pickup.

Detective Sergeant Gordon Wallace said: "At this time of the evening, I would expect there to be a large number of people in the area. As well as lots of traffic going by, there would be pedestrians and people waiting for buses."

A 48-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of dangerous driving. He has been bailed to return pending an investigation.

Anyone who has any information should call 020 8285 1574 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
