Erith and Thamesmead MP Teresa Pearce will go vegan on Wednesday to mark the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi.

The celebrated spiritual leader was a strict vegetarian himself and wrote a book called The Moral Basis of Vegetarianism.

Ms Pearce has told People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) she will be going vegan for the day.

Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869.
