THE GREEN Party has called for a stretch of a popular river path to be re-opened.

Darryl Chamberlain, the party's Greenwich Peninsula ward candidate yesterday asked for the re-opening of the stretch of the Thames Path, from Ballast Quay to the O² arena.

It has been closed due to redevelopment work in the area.

Mr Chamberlain said: "Greenwich council should be putting pressure on developers to reinstate the path as soon as possible.

"Retaining access to the river must be a condition of any future planning approvals.

"The riverside walk is as important to local people as Greenwich Park is - it provides a place for people to exercise, relax, and learn about our history.

"Somehow, a Sunday stroll up Blackwall Lane isn't as appealing.

"With the first phase of the Lovell's Wharf development in Pelton Road approaching completion, many people were hoping to return to the riverside path last week.
