Thamesmead Town put up a valiant effort against Ryman North champions Grays Athletic but eventually fell to a 2-1 defeat on Saturday (April 20).

Grays have now won 17 league games in a row but needed a last-minute winner to defeat Mead, Joao Carlos beating Rob Budd with a low shot into the bottom corner.

The home side had started brightly at Bayliss Avenue and took the lead after three minutes. Visiting goalkeeper Lamar Johnson fumbled a free-kick and Baff Addae finished off the loose ball.

As the half progressed Grays came started creating chances but Carlos was denied by Budd and Kris Newby and Jake Hall both missed the target.

The Essex side equalised 10 minutes into the second-half through Jared Smith. Despite Budd saving his initial shot he was quickest to poke the loose ball into the net.

Carlos grabbed the winner in the dying minutes after Addae and Stuart Zanone missed chanced for the home side and there was still time for Thamesmead captain Lewis Tozer to be shown a red card in stoppage time.

But ahead of the last game of the season away to Harlow Town, Thamesmead secured a top three place which means they will have a home play-off semi-final. It will probably be against Witham Town or Aveley.
