Thamesmead topple league leaders

Rob Carter’s late goal earned Thamesmead Town an excellent victory over Ryman North Division leaders Maldon and Tiptree on Saturday (2).

His 85th minute header clinched the 2-1 win to move Mead up to third in the table, making it their third home league win in a week following successes over Heybridge Swifts and Wroxham.

The hosts took the lead at Bayliss Avenue with 18 minutes on the clock as Sean Roberts unleashed a ferocious shot that left visiting keeper Joe Wright with no chance.

Maldon had their chances but Thamesmead held firm to go in at half-time a goal to the good.

The visitors did equalise sevens minutes after the restart when Danny Kerrigan tripped Lewis Dark and the referee pointed to the spot. Jamie Guy made no mistake.

Mead grabbed the winning goal just as it looked like they would have to settle for a point. Ashley Probets swung in a free-kick and Carter’s header looped over Wright and hit the back of the net.

Thamesmead held firm in the final five minutes and they will look to keep their excellent league run going when they travel to Cheshunt on Saturday (9).
