Thamesmead Town to take on the forces

Thamesmead Town Football Club will bid a fond farewell to HMS Ocean with a charity match.

The game will be played next Wednesday (September 5) at the club’s Bayliss Road ground to raise funds for Help for Heroes.

The Navy’s largest ship has been moored at Greenwich as part of the huge Olympic security presence.

Thamesmead Town spokesman Keith McMahon said: “HMS Ocean contacted us about staging the friendly and we were happy to organise it.

“It will be a good opportunity to say thank you and goodbye to the people who looked after us during the Olympics.

“We hope lots of people will want to come along. We know we can stage it and we owe them that, hopefully the community will come out and support it.”

The game kicks off at 7.45pm. Tickets cost £5 for adults and £3 for concessions.
