BUDDING starlets received a standing ovation after performing at a top West End venue.

The troop, including 10 members from Bexley, performed classics from Chicago, Les Miserables and Jesus Christ Superstar on Sunday, November 23 at Her Majesty's Theatre in the West End.

The group were given five weeks of intense musical training from a team of professionals after making the final cut from 1,200 hopefuls in the Jack Petchey Theatre Challenge.

They were then given a chance to perform on a West End stage alongside Hairspray star Leanne Jones, 23.

Miss Jones said: "I've been so impressed, not just with the standard, but with the discipline the young people have shown to put together such an incredible show in such a short space of time.

"It has been an amazing opportunity for them. I've never seen or heard of anything quite like it before. The more we can do to make musical theatre appeal to young people the better."

Robyn Unsworth, 17, from Bexley, said: "The whole experience was exciting, tiring and very intense, but it was a lot of fun too. The Bexley group have become very close friends and it is an experience none of us will forget.

"My confidence has grown and grown as the weeks have gone by and I'd love to pursue a career in musical theatre."

The Jack Petchey Foundation, based in Ilford, aims to develop the potential of young people aged 11 to 25 in London and Essex.
