SCHOOLS, nurseries and care homes in the area have failed to meet basic food hygiene standards, figures have revealed.

SCHOOLS, nurseries and care homes in the area have failed to meet basic food hygiene standards, figures have revealed.

Some 12 per cent of Greenwich's 117 schools and nurseries have failed to meet the council's Food Hygiene Standard, according to figures released to the Times under the Freedom of Information Act.

Inspections since 2007 until this year have shown that nearly 30 per cent of the 784 institutions inspected failed to be awarded a Food Hygiene Certificate.

These included kitchens at primary schools Alexander McLeod in Abbey Wood, Linton Mead in Thamesmead, Morden Mount in Lewisham Road, Deansfield in Eltham, Notre Dame RC and Gallions Mount in Plumstead, as well as secondary school Abbey Wood.

Also missing hygiene targets were cafes at Greenwich University Park Row campus and nurseries Bear Hugs in Plumstead, Under Fives Group in Charlton Park School and Halstow Play Club.

The under-5s group in Charlton Park School, the Children's Home in Broad Walk, Blackheath and the Oaktree Lodge Memorial Hospital in Shooters Hill also failed to meet the basic standards.

Many of the inspections took place in October and November last year and some as recently as March this year.

A spokesman for Greenwich council refused to comment on any action they were to take with schools that had failed the inspections.

Other venues in the borough that failed to meet safety requirements included the Assembly Rooms in Charlton, Eltham Warren Golf Club, Meridian Sports and Social Club, Blackheath Football Club and FKG Tudor Sports Club.

Some 201 restaurants, takeaways and food outlets out of the total 522 in the borough failed the inspection by Environmental Health. Food outlets in the centre of Greenwich and Eltham fared particularly badly in the food hygiene inspections.

These included the Organic Café Company, Up the Creek Comedy Club, The Yacht, San Miguel, Café Sol, La Cucina di Soteri, The Mitre, Belushi's and the Beachcomber in Greenwich.

In Eltham, the Debenham's restaurant, Eltham Palace Tandoori, The Banker's Draft, Lale Restaurant, Wimpy and the Star of India scored the worst in the area.
