South African batsman Heino Kuhn praised his team-mates after hitting a century in their win over Surrey on Friday.

Kuhn’s 117 was the top score in a record List A score of 384-8 at Beckenham, before Darren Stevens (6-25) produced a career-best bowling display to clinch a 220-run victory.

And Kuhn said: “The other lads make it really easy for me today, scoring their runs quickly, they just allowed me to bat around them so to speak.

“I think our guys wanted it a little more today than the Surrey lads. We trained hard and we’ve taken that attitude out onto the field.

“We needed to adapt a little quicker than we did moving from the championship into white-ball cricket but we’re on a roll with four wins in a row now. The guys are happy and we’re looking to take this further into our remaining games.”

Kuhn, dropped on 21, put on 55 with Daniel Bell-Drummond (48) in the 10-over powerplay and their stand eventually reached 93 before the first wicket fell.

Joe Denly smashed 78 off 71 balls in a 138-run stand with Kuhn, who reached his maiden List A century for the county from 91 balls with a six and 10 fours.

Alex Blake hit four successive sixes off Gareth Batty as he raced to 50 from 24 balls and Kent passed 300, but skied to Jason Roy at long off to depart for 59.

Kuhn top-edged Morne Morkel to long leg but late cameos lifted the total towards 400 before Surrey’s collapse.

“Alex Blake came in and took the pressure off me with a quick 50. He asked if he should go for six sixes (in a Gareth Batty over) and I said sure, if the ball is there, go for it,” added Kuhn.

“Sadly he didn’t get all of it and holed out, but I’ve said all along we are going to prouduce performances as a squad, not just an 11, if we’re to win anything.

“As for Darren Stevens, I’m just pleased I’m on his side. He just loves the game so much and plays every day with a smile, but he’s a very special cricketer.”
