A SCHOOLGIRL was personally congratulated by the Prime Minister on her reading skills.

Paige Roots, nine, a pupil from St Margaret's Church of England Primary School in Greenwich, went to Number Ten Downing Street last Wednesday evening to be congratulated by Gordon Brown for improving her literacy skills.

Paige had a course of one-to-one tuition under a scheme run by the Every Child A Chance Trust which is supported by the government and businesses.

Before the course of 30-minute lessons a day over two months, she could hardly read or write.

She was only one of 17 children at the special event which was also attended by Children, Schools and Families minister Ed Balls.
