AN ""INSPIRATIONAL"" nursery school has been given an outstanding rating by Ofsted.

AN "INSPIRATIONAL" nursery school has been given an outstanding rating by Ofsted, writes Joe Shackley.

Pound Park Nursery School in Charlton achieved the top grade for the quality of its care and educational services across every category in its March inspection.

The report said: "Pound Park is an outstanding nursery school where the uniqueness of each child is recognised and planned for in a stimulating, enjoyable and very caring learning environment."

Headteacher Sheena Gilby praised staff for their hard work at the school, which parents described as "wonderful, caring and inspirational" and "a truly magical place".

She said: "The report was great recognition for all the hard work we've done over the years. We're always looking at ways of providing suitable activities for the kids.

"The school has always had a good reputation and we just wanted to take that to next level and offer a stunning learning environment. We've never had an outstanding report before, so that was special.

"The parents are delighted and have been very supportive throughout the whole process. Historically, the school has had great community links and that is still very important to us."

The school was set up in 1944 as a nursery for the women who worked in the Royal Arsenal, Woolwich.

It caters for the needs of 30 part-time morning and afternoon places and a further 30 full-time.

There is a children's centre on-site which the school runs on the council's behalf and links with the community are maintained through home visits and other inclusive activities such as 'dad's day', where fathers visit the school on weekends.

Councillor Jackie Smith, Greenwich Council cabinet member for children's services said: "The words of the Ofsted inspector really do sum up the wonderful achievements of all who are connected with Pound Park Nursery, and I congratulate the staff on this success.

"Every child is given care tailored to their individual needs and it truly is a magical environment for the children to spend their early years in. We work hard across the borough to ensure the very best educational and care facilities for our young children and Pound Park is a credit to those efforts.
