Rebecca Evans is one of ten young people to be chosen
A Welling teenager is one of ten youngsters about to set off on a 15-day expedition as part of a 30-strong fleet.
Rebecca Evans will be joining the Rendez-Vous 2017 Tall Ships Regatta, which will see 30 boats set sail from Greenwich at 5pm on Sunday, April 16.
The 16-year-old Bexley Youth Council member said: “It seems surreal, the fact I was chosen to be part of Tall Ships is incredibly.
“I am really looking forward to getting time off school, learning how to work better in a group dynamic and experiencing something new.”
The Rendez-Vous 2017 Tall Ships Regatta, organised by Sail Training International, will sail from Greenwich, via Sines in Portugal, Bermuda and Boston, then onto Quebec in Canada, to mark the 150th anniversary of the Canadian Confederation.
Miss Evans has been sponsored to join the voyage by housing group Peabody.
Executive director for Thamesmead, John Lewis, said: “This is a once in a lifetime experience for these ten young people who will be fully integrated into the crew and responsible for running the vessel 24/7.
“I am sure they will learn many life skills and take inspiration that anything in life is possible.”
The ships will be anchored in the Thames alongside two Tall Ships festival villages which will offer live music and entertainment. These will be located at the Maritime Greenwich UNESCO World Heritage Site in Greenwich Town Centre and the Royal Arsenal riverside in Woolwich.
