An Albanian man has been convicted of killing a Barnehurst pensioner.

Gezim Delija broke into an Edendale Road bungalow on January 25 last year and killed 64-year-old Edward Syrad.

Jurors found the 41-year-old guilty of manslaughter and robbery yesterday following a trial lasting just over a week, although they cleared him of possessing an imitation firearm with intent.

He was handed a 20-year sentence for manslaughter and seven years for robbery, to run concurrently.

Mr Syrad and his wife Anne were tied up by Delija, of Waltham Forest, and a second man who has never been caught.

Mrs Syrad called 999 after the robber had left the house but paramedics could not save her husband, and he was pronounced dead at the scene at 10.35pm.

Delija was originally charged with murder but it was downgraded in February.

The post-mortem examination ruled Mr Syrad died of numerous severe blunt trauma injuries and heart trauma.
