Welling United blew a two goal lead at Staines Town last night - but they can still clinch the Blue Square Bet South title on Saturday if results go their way.

A double from top scorer Ross Lafayette saw the Wings race into a 2-0 lead halfway through the second half but two late goals from the home side meant they had to settle for a point.

But nearest challengers also drew, 1-1 at home to Dover Athletic, and Welling will win promotion to the highest non-league division for the first time in 13 years if they beat Weston-Super-Mare at home and Salisbury drop points at Billericay.

Lafayette gave the visitors the lead five minutes before the break and doubled the advantage seven minutes into interval. It was the striker’s 20th and 21st goals of the season in all competitions.

At the time Salisbury were losing to Dover and it looked as though the Wings were going to be on the verge of the title.

But Dan Brown and Louis-Rae Beadle scored in the last 10 minutes to salvage a point for relegation-threatened Staines and Welling must wait before starting the promotion party.

The games against Weston starts at 3pm on Saturday at Park View Road. For ticket information visit pitchero.com/clubs/wellingutd.
