With their Conference Premier status assured for another season Welling United lost 2-0 at Kidderminster Harriers.

Despite a superb performance from goalkeeper Lee Butcher the Wings were defeated by two late goals in Worcestershire.

Michael Gash and Nathan Blissett scored the goals as the visitors resistance was finally broken.

After Harry Beautyman put a free-kick over the bar, Butcher made the first in a string of stunning saves to deny Gash.

The 25-year-old also made excellent stops to keep out shots from Adrian Cieslewicz and Nick Wright as Welling came under intense pressure.

Welling offered an intermittent threat at the other end with Ross Lafayette going close but Kidderminster were given an excellent chance to take the lead when they were awarded a penalty.

Blaine Hudson was adjudged to have fouled Amari Morgan-Smith but Butcher kept out Morgan-Smith’s spot kick.

But the goalkeeper was finally beaten by Gash with 13 minutes remaining before Blissett powerfully headed home Callum Gittings’ cross to make sure of the points. Welling are 17th in the table after the defeat.

They face champions-elect Luton Town on Saturday before a trip to Salisbury on Easter Monday.
