Welling United marched into the second round of the FA Trophy with a comprehensive victory over last season’s beaten finalists Newport County on Saturday.

The visitors, who are third in the Blue Square Bet Premier, almost took the lead after two minutes at Park View Road but Wings goalkeeper Sam Mott made a superb stop from striker Michael Smith.

But Welling dominated for long periods and took the lead after 37 minutes when Joe Healy headed in player-manager Jamie Day’s free-kick.

Substitute Ben Martin sealed the win just before the hour mark with another header, and only a string of saves from Newport goalkeeper Alan Julian kept the scoreline respectable in torrential rain.

The only negatives were injuries to Fraser Franks and Theo Fairweather-Johnson, which saw both players substituted.

Welling are next in action in the Blue Square Bet South tomorrow night against Billericay Town as they look to consolidate their place in the play-off places.
