Two wins ensured Welling ended their pre-season campaign on a high as they prepare for a first taste of Conference Premier football in 13 years.

A trip to Essex to take on Thurrock last Thursday ended in a 2-0 victory.

Welling had plenty of chances at Ship Lane but only had Kurtis Guthrie’s early first-half goal to show for their dominance as they went in at the break 1-0 to the good.

Their lead was doubled early in the second-half, Brian Zeppo poking home after Ross Lafayette’s header came back off the crossbar.

Thurrock never looked like getting back in the game but Welling were thankful for a couple of smart saves from Jamie Turner.

On Saturday (August 3) the Wings faced Leatherhead in their final fixture of a hectic pre-season.

They went one better than against Thurrock, winning 3-0.

Joe Healy gave Welling the lead in the first-half, an advantage which was added to by Doug Bergqvist and Guthrie in the second period.

The Wings are sure to face a tougher test when they travel to Wrexham for their Conference Premier opener on Saturday (August 10). The Welsh side finished fifth in the table and were only denied promotion to the Football League by two late goals from Newport in the play-off final at Wembley.
