Kiernan Hughes-Mason’s brace moved Welling United two points off top spot in torrential rain at AFC Hornchurch.

The 3-0 victory yesterday moved the Wings above Welling and stretches the club’s winning Blue Square Bet South and FA Trophy run to 10 matches.

Forward Hughes-Mason continued his rich vein of form by giving the visitors the lead after 26 minutes, capitalising on a mistake by Duran Reynolds.

Welling’s cause was aided by Lewis Smith’s sending-off before half-time, and Hughes-Mason made the points safe after the break following a brilliant individual run. It was his fifth goal in the last six games.

Defender Loui Fazakerley scored a rare goal to put some gloss on the scoreline.

The Wings leapfrogged Dover Athletic, who lost to Tonbridge Angels. Leaders Salisbury City’s visit to Eastleigh was postponed.

The busy Christmas period sees Welling travel to Sutton United on Saturday before facing Hornchurch again on New Year’s Day.
