Welling United’s winning league run stretched to six games with a comprehensive 3-0 home victory over Hayes and Yeading on Saturday (8).

Kiernan Hughes-Mason was the star with two second-half goals adding to the opener by top scorer Ross Lafayette to keep them second in the Blue Square Bet South.

After a cagey first-half Lafayette bagged his ninth of the season four minutes before the break, swivelling on the edge of the area and finishing with a left-footed shot.

Midway through the second-half Sam Mott made a superb one-handed save from Hayes defender Pedro Monteiro which proved a turning point.

Ten minutes later Hughes-Mason gave Welling some breathing space, slotting the ball under the keeper after 78 minutes.

And the winger clinched the three points four minutes from time, heading the ball into the net from close range.

The Wings remain two points behind leaders Salisbury City, level on points with Dover Athletic. There is a 10 point gap to fourth place Boreham Wood.

Jamie Day’s team travel to Woking in the second round of the FA Trophy on Saturday (15).
