Goals from Lee Clarke and Loick Pires continued Welling’s impressive run as they climbed to sixth in the Conference Premier.

The Wings won 2-0 against Tamworth at Park View Road on Saturday (October 12) and are now just a point and a place outside the play-off places.

Player-manager Jamie Day benched himself for the returning Jake Gallagher despite scoring in the win at Braintree, and the home side started the game strongly.

Clarke missed three chances in the opening ten minutes and Pires dragged a shot wide shortly after.

Tamworth’s Lateef Elford-Alliyu almost stunned Welling when his dipping shot hit the crossbar from 30 yards, and on-loan Wings defender Baily Cargill repeated the feat at the other end.

Kurtis Guthrie became the third player to hit the crossbar just before the hour mark with a long-range effort but Welling took the lead shortly after.

Clarke’s looping header crept under visiting keeper Dale Belford. The Lambs responded immediately with a flurry of chances but were repelled by Lee Butcher in the Welling goal.

Pires clinched the points in the final ten minutes, slotting his shot past Belford inside the penalty area.
