Welling United had Blaine Hudson sent off as they slipped to a 1-0 defeat at home to Halifax.

The defender pulled down Lee Gregory in the area five minutes after half-time to receive his marching orders.

Gregory picked himself up to beat Jamie Turner from the spot for the only goal of the game.

Halifax goalkeeper Matt Glennon denied Harry Beautyman soon after and Matty Pearson blocked the follow-up on the line.

The visitors had chances to extend their lead through Scott McManus, Marlon Jackson and Gregory but it ended 1-0.

Despite the defeat the Wings are comfortably clear of the relegation zone in their first season back in the Conference Premier after a 13 year absence.

They are 15 points clear of fourth bottom Aldershot with 10 games remaining and travel to Cambridge United tomorrow night before facing Forest Green Rovers on Saturday.

It was announced last week that forward Kiernan Hughes-Mason is leaving the Wings after two years with the club.

He was part of the squad which won the Conference South last season but has joined Ryman Premier side Maidstone United.
