Key Welling United defender Anthony Acheampong has joined Conference Premier rivals Barnet.

He joined the Wings in 2010 from Horsham and he made his first start for the Park View Road club in early 2011 due to injuries in the back line.

The 23-year-old came through the youth ranks at Cardiff City and was named apprentice of the year at the south Wales club in 2008.

Manager Jamie Day said: “I’m disappointed to lose him as I think he has done well for us in the last three years.

“But at the same time, given the size of the club that we are and the wages we pay, when bigger clubs come after our players it is difficult to turn them down.

“I’ve spoken to Anthony at length over the past four or five weeks. We made him a good offer to stay but I understand why he has left and wish him well for the future.”

The big centre back made 44 appearances last season, scoring seven goals mostly from headers.

Acheampong was named most improved player last season due to his excellent performances which helped Welling clinch the Conference South title.

The fee for the defender will be set at a tribunal, as he is under 24 years of age and Welling had offered him a new contract.
