Welling United’s third pre-season friendly ended in a 4-1 defeat at home to Leyton Orient on Friday (July 12).

The Wings found themselves four goals down to a strong Orient side within 33 minutes but they battled back strongly in the second-half to keep the scoreline respectable on Friday night (July 12).

David Mooney headed in the opener after four minutes from Sam Cox’s cross. Just 10 minutes later striker Mooney doubled the lead after Romain Vincelot and Shaun Batt had combined.

Cox and Batt quickly made the score 4-0 and any chance Welling had of repeating their victory over Millwall earlier in the week had evapourated.

The Wings gave a better account of themselves in the second period after a wave of half-time substitutions and Loick Pires pulled a goal back against his former club, tucking in Kurtis Guthrie’s low cross.

Joe Healy and Guthrie came close to adding to the home side’s tally but 4-1 probably reflected the nature of the game.

Welling visit Tonbridge Angels tomorrow night (July 16) before heading to Thamesmead on Thursday.
