Connor McClaren scored his first goal for Welling United to squeeze them into the first round of the FA Trophy.

The Wings beat local rivals Cray Wanderers 1-0 away from home on Sunday (November 11) to clinch their place in the next round.

But the away side were made to work hard for the victory by a team three tiers below them in the English football pyramid.

McClaren struck the only goal after 71 minutes after being set up by Theo Fairweather-Johnson and Welling had the majority of the chances throughout the 90 minutes in the tie played at Bromley FC’s Hayes Road ground.

Kurtis Guthrie hit the woodwork in the first half while Joe Healy had a header cleared off the line late on.

But the home caused a few late scares when Welling keeper Sam Mott was forced to pull off a good save from Cray substitute Chris Saunders and Leigh Bremmer hit the post.

The first round tie will be played on Saturday, November 24. Welling face Ebbsfleet in the Kent Senior Cup on Tuesday (November 13) at Park View Road.

They return to league action at home to Blue Square Bet South leaders Salisbury City on Saturday (November 17).
