Welling United Football Club is trying not to dwell on the heartbreaking end to last season when it kicks off the new campaign this Saturday.

The club lost a play-off game to Dartford in May which would have seen it promoted to a national league, bringing increased revenue for a team which almost went out of business in 2010 due to financial irregularities.

Instead they get their campaign under way in the Conference South against Bath City at their Park View Road ground.

Club secretary Barrie Hobbins said: “Spending another season at this level won’t hurt because moving up a league would have been a big step-up in quality.

“A lot has changed in the 12 years since we were last at that level so hopefully we’ll get promoted this season and be more prepared.”

The club secretary is also urging fans to continue getting behind the team, with their support seeing 1,000 travel to Dartford at the end of last season.

Mr Hobbins, 69, said: “If we get 600 or 700 on Saturday, with it still being the summer holidays, that will be a good turnout.

“Since our problems at the start of last season the club has been completely transformed, both on and off the pitch.

“The fans raised £90,000 to keep us going and is well set-up for the future generations. It is now a community interest club which effectively gives the fans a say on the board.”

The game kicks off at 3pm and tickets cost £12, £7 for concessions and £3 for under-12s.
